The village of Egerszalok came into prominence in 1961, when drillers instead of discovering crude oil, stumbled upon thermal water. Since then, the thermal water, characterized by its rich mineral content and constant water temperature of 69 degrees Celsius, has been flowing down the hillside, continuously adding salt deposits to the white travertine terraces creating the salt hill. Over the years, the salt hill has become a symbol for the area, unique in its features. This natural wonder can not be found anywhere else in Europe, and only in two other locations in the world (Pamukkale, Turkey-Asian part, and Yellowstone Park U.S.) The salt hill, embraced by the pine forest, portrays a magnificent sight for the eyes, attracting visitors from all over the country, as well as from all over the world.
The water&undefined;s healing powers and the valley&undefined;s charm were first discovered and explored by the locals; soon enough, however, the news about the spring, the magnificent salt hill, and the tranquillity of the area began to spread (solely by word of mouth). In May 2002, by submitting a winning tender, the 17.5 hectare area encumbering the crystal hill came into the ownership of Szalok Holding Inc. Compared to the 25,000 people that visited Egerszalok in 1993, the total number of visitors in 2003 was over 120,000, an amazing increase considering the limited infrastructure available for spa users.
